Its been a trifecta kinda day...

First, we lose Ed McMahon... A household name and face and the last connection for me, at least, to the real Tonight Show w/ Johnny Carson. He terrorized us all with Publishers Clearing House. I'll never forget that mans laugh.

Then we find out this morning that Farrah Fawcett finally lost her battle to Cancer. I didnt watch the coverage on her thats been on for weeks it seems, but what I did catch was heartbreaking. I almost want to say that its probably better that Farrah said good night. It sounded like she was really suffering. I will always remember her as that gorgeous girl in the red bathing suit with her lil nips poking out, enticing a young boy to stare. Charlies Angels late night re-runs on Nick at Night. She was a staple of my youth. My thoughts go out to her friends and family... Ive been through the battle of Cancer and the wake it leaves, its hard on loved ones and the ramifications wont be felt for a long time.

But Michael? Whhhhaaaaaaattttt? My Aunt Dottie and Uncle Gerald gave me a kids bible in like 1979, and I stuck Michael Jackson stickers all over it when I was old enough to know that book was just like any other book. I moonwalked. I longed for the red jacket with a billion zippers. I had the glove. I played the games. I was indeed a fan.

Then he got all weird. And I got older and the times were a changing. Ive watched over the years as Michael fell farther into obscurity and became a freak show in his own rights. But I never stopped rocking Thriller or Off The Wall. My Mom keeps reminding me that my Dad dedicated "Lady in my Life" at the wedding. We were entrenched in MJ during the 80's.

I have a general motto in life when it comes to art... always keep the art seperate from the artist. On that note... we lost a brilliant man today. Good night MJ, and rest well. Oh and dont worry, Paul will take good care of your catalog.

Crashin the HOWie 6th street pub crawl

Good times were had by all I believe... <snob>Except those of us from the city. 6th st = FAIL.</snob>. But oddly enough, I realized I know nothing about 6th st or the bars on it.  Saw a lot of bars I'd never been too, let alone heard of. It was fun tho to check out the most popular bit of city like a tourist... in my own town.

Heres some of the shots from last night... Didnt pull out the camera enough :(

Labradoodles and allergies; or My dog itches non stop!

Some back story, we have a 1 year old Labradoodle named Kash.

We've been battling allergies since he was a wee pup and have tried just about everything. Just to name a few, Purina HA food, alternative protein sources, cortisone shots, prednisone, booties, the cone, hair cuts, medicated baths, raw food diets, etc. We have spent ALOT of energies and resources into trying to make our puppy a happy and unbothered fellow. Nothing has worked.

His birthday was May 9th and we were told to wait til he was one before we started allergy testing... So we did that today. Bit of an enlightening appointment.

His skin test results:

The scale for the severity of allergic reaction is from 0 - 4. 0 being the weakest, 4 being the worst. So apparently, Kash is allergic to effin everything. According to the pollination schedule, November is the only month Kash is gonna be a happy, itch free doggy.

We're still unsure whether the allergies we're dealing with are also influenced by the food we feed him. We've been on a strict Rabbit and Potato diet for a loooong time and he never got any better, which, we're sure is from the airborn allergies.

I write this for a few reasons though... I want to update our friends out there as to how Kash is doing. I also want to send out a word of warning. If you decide to get a "designer" doggy, be sure you're prepared for the possibility of your best friend being high maintenance with some pretty extreme routine costs. Kash is the best buddy we could have ever hoped for and will always continue to throw every resource we have to get him to a happy place but some people dont feel the same way or dont have the resources available to take on the responsibility. Having said that, Im told from the owners of the rest of the litter that their buddies dont have any problems like we're experiencing so maybe it's just cuz Kash experiencing this, doesnt mean all Labradoodles will. I just want to plant a seed and a cautionary tail. Ask your breeder or whomever you receive your buddy from.

If we had known Kash was gonna have these allergies before we brought him home, we would most definitely do it all over. He is just simply the funniest, most lovable, compassionate, smart ass I have ever met. So please dont take the above as "Dont get a Labradoodle" but I just want to forewarn those unaware of the possibilities in owning so called "designer dogs," ie. Labradoodles, GoldenDoodles, Schnoodles, and thousands more. The cross breeding can sometimes result in adverse, unintended effects which can be emotionally draining for both you and your best friend.

At any rate, we're starting the allergy shots next week to desensitize him from his allergies in the hopes that his immune system will grow a resistance. I'll keep our progress updated here for those curious and for the internets.

*UPDATE*

I wrote the other parents and got a response back with a confirmation that their doggies (2 of Kash's siblings) have also been experiencing the allergies too... so now we at least know its not just Kash.

Up!

It started with a coin flip, fate was left to make the decision. Drag me to Hell vs. Up! Heads? Heads it is. Off we trek to the Alamo South Lamar to see Up!

I thought it was a fantastic film based around a one in a million classic love story between two "explorers." Loss and hanging on to the memories and depression and grief for those we love. Then the eventual realization of having to move on and have new adventures while not betraying those we lost. Lots of cute characters, grumpy old men, and a fat lil boy scout with a big heart.

I suggest going to this one... IMAX's have been showing this in 3D so try to get in on that.

The joys of Ankylosing Spondilitis

I'm at the "infusion clinic," getting my fourth treatment of Remicade, the best drug ever.

Basically, Ankylosing Spondilitis is degenerative arthritis. It eats away at your cartilage until a person is hunchbacked, ribs crushing the internals, and the spine and hips fuse together. Its apparently a genetic desease, passed down from my loving family, thanks guys!

These infusions are the best thing since sliced bread for the quality of life tho... if you can get past the needles. Im proud to announce thats getting easier the more I get poked.

Organization, prioritization, and ROI in the private life.

Project management. Simply put, in our professional careers, we have adopted processes which make our daily jobs easier and streamlined. It doesn't make sense to do y before x, or calculate the investment against ROI to determine profitability. We have many 5 dollar words that determine the best practices when it relates to business. Rarely tho do we ever relate these concepts to our personal lives. Im presupposing, maybe we should.

I make a decent living. Enough to live comfortably. I find myself living paycheck to paycheck and repeating "man, im broke, cant do that." far to often. My spending habits are sporadic. I spend money in direct relation to my day. I pay no attention to where it goes, only my daily whims.

I like smoking and drinking. I like going out for nice meals. I like exploring; buying technology; photography equipment... And I'm into the good stuff. Currently, Im wanting the new iPhone 3GS, 55" Samsung LCD 120mhz, Mac 15" loaded macbook pro, Canon 5D mk II, and oh so much more. Oh, then there's buying a house...

My point is... expensive habits... yet I have no rhythm. I have a kinda sort of idea as to what's coming down the pipeline but never a clear idea. Never any substantial savings, or saying no when I have the money in the account. "I gots it! Lets do it!" Never a let's check the spreadsheet and make sure our long term goals meet up with the short term objectives,

So this is where I find myself living beyond my means. So many people around the globe find themselves in the same situation. I think this is the loop that binds us. Most people are good, hardworking people that want to create and have pride in our lives and family... but with the cellphone = $120; electric = $100; rent = $1000; food = $150; Car ins = $130; Car payment = $420; Credit card payments = $300; student loans = $300, etc. Just the foundational items can be cumbersome.

One possible solution, and this is all theory. We view our finances as we would any other project to manage. Research, outlining, gathering a clear understanding of the full picture, then creating guidelines and allotting a budget, making adjustments where necessary over time. In fact, something tells me a financial advisor would be sharing the same basic concepts.

I find myself at 32. Thoughts of settling, buying a house, assets, portfolios. Grown up stuff. Retirement minded is the long term focus at this point.

So why am I not carrying the same level of organization that I apply to my space, and projects to my financials. Its an issue. Its a recession. Its time to trim and optimize. I need a system.

We need more rational, systemic procedures and view our lives as a project, not unlike a sims game.

New luggage from High Sierra

I picked up two bags from the High Sierra Level luggage collection today at Macys. The 25" bag (http://bit.ly/g08v2) and the Deluxe Tote bag (http://bit.ly/10Hmqv) - Both in orange, trimmed in grey.

Macy's is having a big sale (one day only)... and fresh off this last trip, I needed to organize my traveling fiercely. Borrowing bags, making due, carrying 50 lbs on my shoulders; Its just a beat down. I think these bags will stand out, and be durable to the assault that is airport baggage check. The Deluxe Tote has a billion pockets and has the wheels and pull out handle + a shoulder strap so I should be great with the carry on & conference strolling now.

The shoulders thank you High Sierra. The back thanks you.

Now to get some more clothes and I wont be the guy that looks like he never travels.

Where everything is not the same...

Day 3 of the Internet Retailer in Boston, we took off on foot to feed the belly. We ended up in a few bars, had bar food, then off to find a Boston hoody. Found this area, no idea where it was, but it was all outdoor and indoor shops and bars and restaurants. Which one of the restaurants was Cheers! Oh yeah! Cheers is in Boston!

Apparently, this one was just a tourist knockoff, but through some random interrogations, the real one was called Bull and Finch, and was - you know - down the street, left here, round the building, back of the park, bing. Ok? After what might have been 30 mins of constantly asking directions, and getting lost, We ran into a couple of fellas wandering to the bar and these guys and one in particular, Shaun I believe, or Shane. Good, good guy. He gave us a mini guided tour of Boston of the bits we walked through on the way to the Bull and Finch. State Building, Boston Commons, Beacon Hill, Gardens... And bam. Cheers!

Back story: I was born in '76, I grew up on Cheers. Everyone knew your name... Norm! Yeah... Cliff and I were bff.

In the photos, you see the outside looks perfect. I'm freaking out like... effin Cheers! Unreal right? You walk in and its soooo not Cheers. Its this tiny room, bar on the wall, no office. No Pool table in the back. No restaurant upstairs. There is a hall, but its gotta gift store, photos of the cast. There is an upstairs, but there's what I think a hotel, and a "set" bar but its definitely not the bar.

W.T.F.

So I thought for some reason... I had the idea that this location and back story was the place. Sam Malone did exist, but the recession had forced the bar to let him go (unconfirmed). Ironic. So it was a let down.

But. I did steal a mug as replacement for my crushed expectation. Was that wrong?
